Where WebP genuinely wins
WebP uses a more modern block prediction scheme than JPEG, and the gap widens as the target gets smaller. At a comfortable 500 KB the two formats look much the same; at 20 KB the WebP is clearly the better picture.
It also supports transparency, which JPEG does not. That combination — lossy compression plus an alpha channel — is the reason to reach for WebP when a PNG logo has to meet a size limit.
Where WebP will get you rejected
Browser support has been universal for years, but upload validators have not kept up. Government portals, older recruitment systems and many print services still check for JPG or PNG specifically and reject anything else, size limits notwithstanding.
The rule of thumb: WebP for anything going onto a website you control, JPEG for anything going into a form somebody else built.
Converting the other way
If you have been given a WebP and need a JPG, set the output format to JPEG and pick a target comfortably above the original size. The conversion happens without further quality loss beyond the single re-encode, and the download gets a .jpg extension.
