Why 100 KB is the limit you keep running into
100 KB is the most common cap on upload forms, and it is not an accident. It is roughly the largest photo that a form can accept from tens of thousands of people a day without the storage bill or the page timeouts becoming a problem, while still being big enough to recognise a face.
Application portals, examination boards, bank verification pages and older content management systems all tend to land on the same number. If a form told you "maximum 100 KB" and rejected your phone photo, the reason is simply that a modern phone camera produces files of three to six megabytes — thirty to sixty times over.
What a 100 KB image actually looks like
100 KB is a comfortable target. For a passport-style headshot around 600 by 800 pixels, the compressor will typically settle on JPEG quality in the seventies, which is visually hard to tell from the original at normal viewing size.
For a full-width landscape photo at 4000 pixels wide, 100 KB is a much harder ask. The tool will reduce the pixel dimensions first and then compress, because a wide photo held at full width and squeezed to 100 KB would look blocky. If you need the original dimensions kept, aim for 500 KB instead.
How to hit exactly 100 KB
The tool does not simply apply a fixed quality setting and hope. It re-encodes your image repeatedly, measures the byte count each time and narrows in on the highest quality that still fits the target. That is why the result reliably lands just under the limit rather than far below it.

If the form still rejects it
Check whether the form also has a dimension limit or a format restriction. Plenty of portals want a JPG specifically, and will refuse a PNG or a WebP even when the file size is fine — switch the output format above if so.
Some forms measure in kilobytes of 1024 bytes and some in 1000, so a file that is 100.0 KB by one definition is 102,400 bytes by the other. This tool targets the stricter reading, so a file it says is under 100 KB is under both.
Questions people ask
Does compressing to 100 KB ruin the photo?
Not for a portrait or document photo at ordinary dimensions. You will see softening on fine detail such as hair or text if you zoom in, but at the size a form displays it, the difference is usually invisible.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The compression runs in JavaScript inside your browser tab. There is no upload endpoint on this site — the file never crosses the network.
Can I compress several photos at once?

What if I need under 100 KB but also above a minimum size?
